Did some fiddling with System Heaps the other day. Thought you might be interested in what I found out.
Under System 6.0, the System Heap size for the 128K Mac is set to 17,152 (16.5K).
Sort of meaningless, actually, since you can’t run Sys 6.0 on a 128K Mac...
The System heap for 512K and larger machines was set to 131,072 bytes (128K) on my machine running MultiFinder and System 6.0.1 alpha - whatever. This is 80K larger than what Widgets considers normal.
Incidentally, the value Widgets is using for “normal” appears to be 49,152 bytes (48K) (that’s what I got when I used it to set my system heap to 0K larger than normal....)
I’ve currently set my system heap to 256K larger than normal (or 311,296 bytes - 304K) and seem to be having a lot less problems under MultiFinder with DA’s. I didn’t bomb all day today - something of a record for me.

The “Read Me” application does not print to the LaserWriter II SC, due to Apple removing support for “text streaming” printing.
Title: PostScript 42.2 or 47?

“LaserStatus says we have version 42.2 version of Postscript - we have 47”
When Adobe updated the version number of PostScript to “47”, they forgot to update the version number in the LaserWriter ROM from “42.2”.
How do you tell which version of PostScript you are running? Take a look at the startup page (turn it back on if you used Widgets to turn it off...) If the test page that comes out has a small 3.0 somewhere on it, it’s version 47 of the ROMS. If it has a 2.0, it’s PostScript version 38, if it has a 1.0 on it, it’s PostScript verson 23. The rom upgrade is $199 for LaserWriter Plus owners.

Use DiskTop change the IW LQ driver’s file creator from BWRT to IWRT. Make the changes with Widgets. Change the file type back.

“I just installed DiskTop (or an upgrade to DT) and now I don’t see some of the invisible files, such as the “DeskTop” file.”
SOLUTION: Select “Preferences” from the DISKTOP Menu and change the “Level:” to “Technical” from the default of “Normal”. If you have it set to “locked normal”, though, you’ll need to reinstall a fresh copy of DiskTop.

I have “Stepping Out”. When I use DiskTop to run a program, the screen size gets reset to normal?
SOLUTION: Upgrade to version 3.0.2 of DiskTop, then use WIDGETS 3.0.2 to check [X] the “Don’t Save Finder Windows” check box in the CONFIGURE INTERNATIONAL RESOURCES dialog box (new to Widgets 3.0.2).

File Copies:
DiskTop creates a memory buffer when doing a file copy. This buffer is created "on-the-fly" and is as large as either memory will permit or the size of the file being copied. If you copy a 350k file and only 150k of memory was available for the buffer you would have to insert the source disk 3 times and the destination disk 3 times.
Before the destination disk.
Title: Microphone I

CES Product: DiskTop
Other Product: Microphone I
Under regular Finder (not MultiFinder), DiskTop cannot run programs from within Microphone version 1.0, either from the DiskTop menu or by double-clicking, This is because Microphone DIMS all of its MENU TITLES when a DA is open, except the EDIT menu. Looks like they just dimmed the menu headers themselves, which has the effect of disabling the menu completely. They should have just dimmed the menu items that aren't applicable when a DA is open.
WORKAROUND: None, except maybe get Microphone II. The problem doesn’t exist in MultiFinder, because the DA isn’t open in Microphone.
